When You’re Tired Of Being The Strong One
Let’s face it. It can be wearing to always be the “strong” one. Whether it’s in your family or friend group, at your church, or the person who always seems to keep your office running smoothly, there’s that one person who makes it all work. The go-to. The encourager. The one who always knows the answers and the strength — even when they are running on fumes.
And sometimes, that person is yourself.
It’s commendable to have strength, but that doesn’t mean you are impervious. God never meant for you to take the weight of the world on your shoulders. Even Jesus took moments to withdraw from the crowd, rest, and reconnect with the Father. So if the Son of God felt it necessary to take a break, why do we experience guilt from taking one?
Let’s Talk Honestly For A Minute
Have you ever felt you just couldn’t do this one more day? Or perhaps at times you have resented the fact that everyone thinks you are just going to show up and make it all better, when you are barely keeping your head above water.
Take a second to breathe and declutter your mind.
You don’t have to have it all figured out. It’s not your responsibility to be all things to all people.” And honestly? And it is okay to say: “I am not okay.
Signs That You’re Running on Empty
- You are always “on,” but emotionally spent
- You sweat the small stuff
- Your prayer life is dry, or feels distant
*You feel guilty for doing things for yourself - You sob in the shower (no judgment, we see you)
If any of these rang home, then it might be time to call a halt for a refill.
Scripture is chock full of reminders that it’s not on us to conjure up our own strength, but to trust in His. (2 Corinthians 12:9): “My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in your weakness.”
It’s more than a pretty Instagram caption, that verse. It’s a lifeline. It’s God’s quiet little whisper saying, “You don’t have to do this by yourself.”
A Little Reflection Time
Let’s make this interactive. Take out a notebook, or go to your notes app and respond to these:
- When did I ever allow myself to stop and rest?
- What am I holding onto now I have not yet given to God?
- Who is in my corner whom I can lean on?
- Do I request the help that I give to others?
- How can I make room for joy in the day-to-day routine?
A Note About Prayer
If you believe in God and this is something you do personally to connect with Him, then this might be a great time to have a chat with God. It doesn’t have to be fancy. Just honest. Whether you whisper, “Help me,” heave a sigh, or write down raw thoughts, He does. He sees you. And He cares deeply.
You can also write your own brief prayer or research scriptures to meditate on. (Need help? Try Matthew 11:28-30 or Psalm 23.)
You’re More Than What You Carry
Being strong is not your identity. Being loved by God is.
Your value does not lie in how much you can tolerate or how many people depend on you. It’s in who you belong to. God is pleased with you—not because of what you do, but simply because you belong to Him.
So today, cut yourself some slack:
- Say no without guilt
- Allow yourself to be cared for, not just to care-give
- Stop striving and start resting
This column — Kick in Daily — was made for moments like this. Where you can have a breath, be reminded of the truth, and feel seen.
You may be strong, but you are not alone. Come back here whenever for honest conversations, faith-filled encouragement and a gentle nudge: You don’t have to be strong all the time. Every now and again, the most powerful thing you can do is ask for help.
So go ahead. Exhale. Let God hold you today.
And when you’re ready, return and ask: How are you really doing?
